Ni’lin Commemorates The Second Anniversary To The Killing Of Aqel Srour/03.06.2011

Around 300 demonstrators gathered in Ni’lin to commemorate the anniversary of the death of a local activist named Aqil Srour. Organized by the Ni’lin Popular Committee and joined by Israeli and international solidarity activists, the protest commenced at 1:00pm. A group from the British Labour Party was amongst the participants.

Once the protest reached the gate of the Apartheid Wall, the Israeli soldiers began shooting live ammunition. Additionally they fired rubber coated steel bullets and tear gas at the crowd. Several suffered from tear gas inhalation. The demonstration concluded at 3:00pm and no one was injured.

The protest was to honor the second anniversary of the death of Aqil Srour. Srour was killed by Israeli occupation forces on June 5th 2009, with a 0.22 caliber live bullet while he was trying to rescue a youth also shot by the live ammunition. Srour was evactuated to the hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival. He left behind a wife and 3 children.

Srour was the 5th villager to be killed by Israeli armed forces in unarmed protests in the village of Ni’lin.
